Kayak Paddle Accessories
Although a kayak and a paddle are sufficient for a kayaking session, having a few kayaking accessories would enhance the performance of these basic tools, thereby making the kayaking session even more enjoyable. There are several accessories available for a kayak as well as a paddle. The paddle accessories, though simple, are of great importance as they help in improving the paddle performance and also protect it.
Paddle Accessories
There are several paddle accessories used by paddlers and have now become a mainstay of a kayaking kit. Some of the major accessories are:
1. Kayak Paddle Float: The kayak paddle float is a tool is extremely vital as it is used during emergency situations like self rescue. The paddle float is like an inflatable pillow and is attached to the paddle blade. In a self rescue situation, the paddler must try to get into the cockpit by keeping the hands on the outer rim of the cockpit and propelling the body inside.
While getting into the normal position, the float is used to stabilize the kayak and the paddler must transfer his weight on the float and not on the kayak or it may capsize. The paddle has two inflatable chambers of which only one needs to be blown up to use. More than an accessory, the kayak paddle float is a safety measure and must always be a part of the kayaking kit.
2. Kayak Paddle Bag: A kayak paddle bag is essential to safely tuck away the paddle before and after a kayaking session. Using a bag prevents the paddle from developing any dings or scratches that may occur during the transport. Several paddle bags can accommodate more than one paddle and can easily fit up to 3 paddles together. Such bags comprise of internal separators so that the paddles do not collide with each other and remain intact.
3. Kayak Paddle Clips: The kayak paddle clips are very useful and are used to clip the paddle so that paddlers can keep their hands free while entering or exiting the kayak.
Although these clips can be mounted anywhere on the kayak, most paddlers attach it on the cockpit rim in the front. Paddlers must ensure that they attach the clips such that the paddle is always within reach from the cockpit.
4. Kayak Paddle Holder: Similar to the paddle clips in function, the kayak paddle holder is used as a stand to hold the paddle when not in use. These holders can not only be used to secure paddles but other range of kayaking accessories as well.
5. Kayak Paddle Grips: The paddle grip is a very simple but extremely useful piece of accessory used by paddlers. Using a paddle grip helps in holding the paddle more firmly without causing any blisters or bumps on the palms. The grip provides a soft cushioning to the palms and especially proves beneficial in long kayaking sessions.
These are some of the major kayak paddle accessories, which are very essential for regular kayakers.
